Universal Church of the Kingdom of God
The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG, Portuguese: Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus) was founded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1977 by Edir Macedo. It is a neo-Pentecostal denomination with a strong emphasis on spiritual warfare against demonic forces, financial prosperity as a sign of divine blessing, and miraculous healing. Its theology is characterized by the prosperity gospel, seed-faith giving, and an aggressive evangelism model. The UCKG has spread to over 100 countries and operates major media channels. It has been controversial for its financial practices and its adaptation of Christian practice to compete with Afro-Brazilian spiritual traditions.
