Maronite Catholic

CatholicFounded: Tradition traces to St. Maron (c. 350–410 AD); institutionalized as a distinct church by the 7th–8th century~4M adherents

The Maronite Church is an Eastern Catholic church of Antiochene (West Syriac) origin that claims an unbroken communion with the Bishop of Rome since its founding. Named after St. Maron, a 4th-century Syrian ascetic, the church is concentrated in Lebanon and in large diaspora communities in Brazil, Argentina, the United States, and Australia. The Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, based in Bkerké, Lebanon, leads the church. Its ancient West Syriac liturgical tradition was substantially Latinized following the Crusades and the Synod of Mount Lebanon (1736), giving Maronite practice a character closer to the Latin Rite than that of most other Eastern Catholic churches.
