The Church of Jesus Christ on Earth through the Prophet Simon Kimbangu (EJCSK) originated in 1921 in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, when Baptist lay preacher Simon Kimbangu (1887–1951) conducted dramatic healing revivals. Belgian colonial authorities suppressed the movement and imprisoned Kimbangu for 30 years until his death. The EJCSK was formally organized after Congolese independence and joined the World Council of Churches in 1969. A distinctive theology developed: Simon Kimbangu is revered as the Holy Spirit incarnate—the Paraclete promised in John 14—making the Kimbanguist Trinity consist of God the Father, Jesus the Son, and Kimbangu the Holy Spirit in human form.
