Kimbanguist theology affirms the doctrine of creation ex nihilo (creation from nothing) as taught in Genesis 1:1-2. God is the sole Creator of all things; the universe and all that exists are brought into being by God's sovereign word. Genesis 1:1-2 is understood as the foundational biblical statement that 'in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth,' and 'the earth was formless and empty' until God brought forth creation through the power of his Word.

This doctrine is fundamental to Kimbanguist faith and is consistent with the movement's emphasis on God's transcendence and sovereignty. The Holy Spirit moving over the waters (Genesis 1:2) is understood as the divine power bringing order and life. Creation belongs to God alone; no other being or force has creative power.
