Community of Christ ordained women to the priesthood beginning in 1984 — a World Conference decision that was one of the most significant distinctions from the Utah LDS Church. Today, all priesthood offices, including apostle and high priest, are open to men and women without regard to marital status or sexual orientation (in most jurisdictions). The church has had women serving as apostles and in the First Presidency.

This egalitarian ordination policy reflects both the denomination's progressive theology and its reading of Restoration scriptures as calling all to service. The priesthood in Community of Christ is understood as a calling to serve the community and the world, not as a gender-specific entitlement.
