Community of Christ is led by a First Presidency (prophet-president and counselors) and a Council of Twelve Apostles, supported by other quorums. The prophet-president may receive revelations for the church, which are submitted to the World Conference for discernment and vote before being added to the Doctrine and Covenants (Community of Christ version). This conciliar model of revelation — requiring community ratification — distinguishes Community of Christ from the more hierarchical LDS authority structure.

The church's governance has become more democratic and less hierarchical over time, with increased emphasis on shared discernment and congregational participation. The World Conference — meeting every three years — is the highest legislative body.
