The Spirit's ongoing guidance is not external to or in competition with Scripture but works through Scripture and in concert with it.

Mystical or ecstatic experiences are not rejected but are tested against Scripture and community wisdom. The Brethren in Christ are skeptical of charismatic claims to continuous prophecy or new doctrine. The emphasis is on obedience to known Scripture and discernment with and through the community rather than on new revelations.
