The PCA affirms the virgin birth of Christ as taught in the Westminster Confession of Faith VIII.4. Jesus Christ was literally conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, without a human father.
This doctrine is attested in Matthew 1 and Luke 1 and is considered essential to the Christian faith. The virgin birth affirms both the genuine humanity of Christ (born of a true human mother) and his unique divine origin. It underscores the supernatural character of the incarnation and Christ's sinless nature.
The doctrine does not deny Mary's womanhood or reproductive capacity, but rather highlights the extraordinary divine action in bringing about the incarnation. After Christ's birth, Mary had normal marital relations with Joseph and bore other children, as the PCA affirms.
