Virgin birth affirmed; Mary as Theotokos and ever-virgin venerated
The Maronite Church firmly affirms the virgin birth of Jesus Christ and the perpetual virginity of Mary. Mary is venerated with particular intensity in the Maronite tradition, which celebrates numerous Marian feasts throughout the liturgical year. As Theotokos—God-bearer—Mary is the supreme model of faith and receptivity to God.
The Immaculate Conception (defined by Rome in 1854) is accepted by the Maronite Church in full communion with the Latin definition. The Assumption of Mary (defined in 1950) is also affirmed. Marian shrines are prominent throughout Lebanon and in Maronite diaspora communities. The feast of Our Lady of Lebanon (Saydet Liban) is celebrated on the first Sunday of May with great solemnity.
