Virgin birth affirmed; 33 annual Marian feasts; Mary's Assumption a major feast
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church affirms the virgin birth of Jesus Christ with great emphasis, and Marian devotion is extraordinarily prominent. Mary (Mariam or Maryam in Ge'ez) is venerated as Theotokos and honored with a remarkable number of feast days—at least 33 Marian feasts throughout the liturgical year—a level of Marian commemoration exceeded by no other Christian tradition except possibly the Coptic.
The month of Nehase (August in the Ethiopian calendar) is particularly dedicated to Mary, with an extended fast (Tsome Filseta, the Fast of the Assumption) observed for at least 16 days. The Feast of the Assumption of Mary (Filseta) is celebrated with great solemnity and is among the most important celebrations of the Ethiopian church year. The ancient Ge'ez hymns known as the Weddase Maryam (Praise of Mary) and Anqets are sung daily in Ethiopian monasteries and churches, expressing the deep Marian piety of the tradition.
