Immortal soul; conscious intermediate state; bodily resurrection at final judgment
WELS affirms that the human soul is immortal and persists in conscious awareness after bodily death. Death does not end consciousness or spiritual existence; rather, the soul of the believer enters into the presence of Christ, while the soul of the unbeliever is separated from God's fellowship. Both states are conscious and real.
The doctrine of bodily resurrection is central to WELS theology. At the final judgment, all the dead will be raised bodily—their physical bodies will be resurrected and reunited with their souls. The righteous will be raised to eternal glory in transformed, glorified bodies; the unrighteous will be raised to eternal shame and condemnation. This resurrection is literal, physical, and bodily, not merely spiritual or metaphorical.
WELS rejects soul sleep (the view that the soul is unconscious between death and the resurrection) and affirms instead the immediate conscious existence of the soul after death. The intermediate state is real and meaningful, not a mere waiting period. The ultimate Christian hope is not the immortality of the soul alone but the resurrection and glorification of the entire person—body and soul—in eternal communion with God.
