Second Coming

Reformed Baptists affirm the literal, bodily, visible return of Jesus Christ to earth at the end of history, as taught in the 1689 London Baptist Confession, Chapter 31. This Second Coming is not a figure of speech, a spiritual coming through the church, or the death of individual believers but a real historical event when Christ returns in the clouds with power and great glory. All eyes will see him, and the heavens and earth will be shaken at his appearance.

At Christ's return, he will raise the dead and judge all humans according to their deeds. The resurrection of the dead is general and universal: both believers and unbelievers will be raised to face judgment. Those who have believed in Christ and trusted him will be raised to eternal life and glory, while those who die in unbelief will face eternal condemnation.

The Second Coming will consummate history and initiate the renewal of all creation. Christ will establish his eternal kingdom, destroy all his enemies including Satan and death, and reign with the redeemed in the new heavens and new earth. This hope is not speculative but grounded in the apostolic witness and repeated in Scripture as the blessed expectation of the church. It motivates godliness and patience, encouraging believers to live in light of Christ's return.
