Second Coming

The C&MA places great emphasis on the second coming of Christ, which is the fourth element of the fourfold gospel (Christ as Coming King). The return of Jesus is understood as personal (he himself will return, not merely his influence or kingdom), imminent (it could happen at any time, though the precise day and hour are unknown), and visible/audible (all will witness his return).

This doctrine is central to C&MA eschatology, piety, and practice. The hope in Christ's return shapes Christian living, calling believers to watchfulness, readiness, and faithful service. The C&MA teaches premillennialism — that Christ will return before the millennial kingdom — and a pretribulational rapture view is common, though not universally required. However, the essential affirmation is Christ's personal return and the certainty of his future kingdom.

The second coming is not merely a distant hope but a truth meant to exercise present ethical and spiritual influence on believers. The C&MA hymnody, devotional literature, and teaching repeatedly emphasize that Christians are awaiting Christ's return, that he is coming to reign, and that present suffering will be vindicated when the Coming King establishes his kingdom. This eschatological emphasis has historically motivated the C&MA's missionary passion: the gospel must be preached to all nations before the end comes.
