Two ordinances: baptism (various practices) and Lord's Supper (open communion)
The ECC teaches that there are two ordinances (not sacraments in a salvific sense) ordained by Christ: baptism and the Lord's Supper. These are symbolic and meaningful acts that commemorate and apply gospel truths, not means that convey grace and salvific efficacy. Baptism signifies identification with Christ's death and resurrection and commitment to follow him. The Lord's Supper is a memorial of Christ's death and a time of covenant renewal with Christ and the communion of saints.
The ECC practices considerable flexibility regarding baptism. Both infant baptism and believer's baptism are practiced among ECC congregations. The denomination does not mandate a single pattern, recognizing that thoughtful evangelicals and faithful Bible readers differ on this matter. Some ECC churches practice infant baptism with the understanding that children born to believing parents are received into the covenant community and raised in faith. Others practice believer's baptism only. Both approaches are considered valid within the denomination.
The Lord's Supper is celebrated as a sacred meal of remembrance and communion. The ECC affirms the real spiritual presence of Christ in the Supper and practices open communion — welcoming to the table all who have been baptized and who sincerely desire to commemorate Christ's death and renew their commitment to him. This openness reflects the ECC's commitment to unity and the inclusiveness of gospel grace.
