Christ pre-existed eternally as divine Son before the incarnation
The EFCA Statement of Faith identifies Jesus Christ as 'the eternal Son of God,' explicitly affirming his preexistence before the incarnation. He is the second person of the Trinity, coequal and coeternal with the Father and the Spirit, who 'became flesh' (John 1:14) at the incarnation — taking on human nature without abandoning divine nature.
The eternal preexistence of the Son is integral to the EFCA's high Christology. The statement's language that he is 'the eternal Son' means that Jesus' sonship and divine being have no temporal beginning: there was never a time when the Son did not exist. The incarnation is the enfleshment of the pre-existent Son, not the creation of a new divine entity.
This affirmation is fully consistent with the Nicene Creed ('begotten of the Father before all ages') and places the EFCA within the mainstream of orthodox Christianity.
