Millennium

The ECC does not mandate a specific eschatological position regarding the millennium (the thousand-year reign of Christ described in Revelation 20). Premillennialism, amillennialism, and postmillennialism are all represented within ECC congregations and theology. This diversity is considered non-essential, and the denomination respects the conscientious study and theological conviction of its members and churches on these eschatological details.

The millennial question concerns when and how Christ's kingdom is established and the nature of the thousand-year period in biblical prophecy. Premillennialists believe Christ will return before the millennium and reign visibly for a thousand years. Amillennialists understand the thousand years figuratively as the entire church age, with Christ already reigning spiritually. Postmillennialists believe Christ will return after a period of gospel expansion and Christian influence in the world. Each view has biblical support and thoughtful theologians within the ECC tradition.

The ECC's permissive stance on eschatology reflects its commitment to unity amid theological diversity. What is essential is that Christ will ultimately consummate his kingdom, judge the living and dead, and establish eternal righteousness. How this occurs, the sequence of events, and the interpretation of apocalyptic symbols are considered areas where sincere Christians may differ. The ECC encourages careful study of Scripture while maintaining fellowship across millennial positions.
