Millennium

The CRCNA has traditionally held an amillennial view of the millennium, though there is some diversity of opinion within the denomination. Amillennialism teaches that there is no literal 1,000-year earthly reign of Christ after his return. Instead, the '1,000 years' of Revelation 20 is understood symbolically as the entire church age — the period from Christ's resurrection to his return. Christ's kingdom is now present but spiritual; his enemies are being subdued throughout history through the preaching of the gospel.

Historically, some CRCNA theologians have held postmillennial views, anticipating a future golden age of gospel influence and cultural Christianization before Christ's return. This view has declined in popularity but remains a minority position within the denomination. Premillennialism — the view that Christ will return before a literal 1,000-year reign on earth — is not prominent in CRCNA theology, though individual members may hold this view.

The CRCNA does not embrace a rapture doctrine as a separate event preceding or following Christ's return. Instead, believers are said to be 'caught up' at the second coming itself, which is the general resurrection and judgment of all people. The focus is on Christ's return as the final, all-encompassing climactic event, not as the first of multiple end-times phases. The Belgic Confession and Heidelberg Catechism do not elaborate an explicit millennialist position, leaving room for discussion, but the amillennial tradition predominates.
