Military Service

The Syro-Malabar Church affirms that military service is morally permissible and that nations have the right to defend themselves against aggression. The church follows Catholic just war theory, which permits the use of military force under specific conditions: when it is for a just cause (such as defense against invasion), when it is declared by legitimate authority, and when it is likely to succeed and is proportionate to the harm being prevented.

The church teaches that citizens have a duty to obey legitimate civil authorities and that this may include military service when required. However, the church also recognizes the right of conscientious objection for those whose conscience forbids participation in warfare. Such individuals may be called to alternative service or may be excused from military service on grounds of conscience, provided that such exemptions are lawfully available.

The church's social teaching emphasizes the dignity of human life and the goal of peace and justice. While affirming the right of nations to defend themselves, the church also calls for the pursuit of diplomatic solutions and the minimization of violence. The church supports international law and institutions that work toward peace and the resolution of disputes.
