Matthew 16:18 — "Upon This Rock"

The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God takes a nuanced position on Matthew 16:18. While affirming that Jesus is the ultimate Rock and foundation of the Church, the UCKG recognizes that Jesus delegates authority to Peter (and to the apostles more broadly) to lead and shepherd the Church on earth.

The UCKG does not adopt a Catholic understanding of papal succession or papal infallibility. Rather, it sees in Matthew 16:18 a biblical pattern: Jesus establishes an earthly leadership structure through appointed leaders (apostles, bishops, pastors) who exercise binding authority — 'whatsoever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven.' The UCKG's own episcopal structure reflects this understanding of delegated apostolic authority.

In UCKG theology, spiritual authority flows from Christ through appointed leaders in the Church hierarchy. While Christ is the ultimate foundation (the Rock in an absolute sense), Peter and the apostles represent the foundational leadership through which Christ governs His Church. This nuanced reading allows the UCKG to maintain both Christological supremacy and a strong doctrine of ecclesiastical authority.
