Matthew 16:18 — "Upon This Rock"

The Community of Christ affirms Peter's important role as described in Matthew 16:18 but understands this role within a broader theology of priesthood and authority. The Community rejects papal infallibility and the notion that Peter's authority was meant to be inherited by a single line of successors.

Instead, the Community emphasizes the priesthood of all believers and a pattern of leadership that includes both formal offices and shared governance. The Community of Christ's own tradition includes a presidency or leadership council, but this is not understood as Petrine papal succession. Rather, it is understood as a continuation of apostolic office subject to the voice of the Spirit and the community's discernment. Matthew 16:18 affirms both Peter's role and the broader Church's foundation in Christ.
