Rather, the Nazarene reading emphasizes that the Church is built on the shared confession of Christ by all believers. The keys given to Peter are understood as authority exercised within the Church on behalf of Christ, subject to Christ's own authority and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Peter is important but not infallible or supreme.
