John 1:1 — "The Word Was God"

The International Church of Christ affirms John 1:1 and the deity of Christ. The word 'Word' (Logos) refers to Jesus Christ, who is fully divine and the agent of creation. This is the foundation for understanding Christ's absolute authority over his disciples and the church.

The ICOC understanding connects Christ's divinity to his role as Lord and Master of all disciples. Since Christ is God, his commands are binding and non-negotiable. This theological affirmation supports the ICOC conviction that disciples must absolutely submit to Christ's lordship as expressed through his teachings and the structure of his church.
