James 2:24 — "Justified by Works"

The Evangelical Covenant Church affirms James 2:24 as expressing the biblical truth that genuine faith necessarily produces works of righteousness and love. This is not understood as contradicting Paul's emphasis on justification by faith (which the ECC also affirms), but as the complementary perspective that faith is living and active.

The ECC emphasizes that saving faith is not passive belief or mere intellectual assent. Rather, it is a transformative commitment to Christ that necessarily manifests itself in changed behavior, ethical living, and acts of charity. The fruits of the Spirit and obedience to Christ's commands are natural expressions of a faith that truly trusts in him.

The ECC's ethical emphasis—rooted in its Swedish pietist heritage—means that the Christian life is not simply about right belief but about right living. Works are the evidence and fruit of genuine faith, not the means of earning salvation. A faith that does not produce good works is called into question as to whether it is genuine.
