Third person of Trinity; indwells believers; gifts vary by congregation
The SDB Statement of Belief affirms the Holy Spirit as the third person of the Trinity, fully divine and coequal with the Father and Son. The Spirit was active in creation, in the inspiration of Scripture, in the incarnation of Christ, and now indwells and empowers believers for Christian living and witness. The Spirit regenerates, sanctifies, and gifts individual believers for the building up of the church.
However, SDB congregations vary in their understanding and practice regarding the charismatic gifts, particularly speaking in tongues. While the denomination does not prohibit belief in continuing manifestations of the Spirit's gifts, neither is Pentecostal experience normative or required. Some SDB communities emphasize a more cessationist approach, while others are open to ongoing spiritual gifts.
The SDB tradition emphasizes that the Spirit works through and in harmony with Scripture. Any claimed revelation or experience must be tested against the written Word of God. The diversity of practice on this point reflects the congregational autonomy characteristic of the SDB denomination.
