Eternal presence with God; new creation; bodily resurrection and glorification
The LCMS teaches that heaven is the final dwelling place of the redeemed, understood as an eternal communion with God. Heaven is not merely a disembodied, non-physical reality but involves the resurrection and transformation of the body. The righteous will enjoy eternal life in glorified bodies in a renewed creation—a 'new heaven and new earth' (Revelation 21:1-4).
Heaven is characterized by the beatific vision—the direct sight and knowledge of God. The redeemed will behold God face to face and enjoy unmediated communion with the Triune God and with the communion of saints. All suffering, sorrow, pain, and death will be abolished. The reign of God will be visibly and directly experienced by all the redeemed. Worship, joy, love, and righteous activity will characterize the eternal state.
Heaven is not merely the continuation of earthly life in altered form but a wholly renewed creation in which the redeemed will dwell in perfect righteousness, holiness, and love. The biblical imagery of heaven—streets of gold, gates of pearl, no night, the throne of God, etc.—is understood to express the reality of God's glory and the perfect state of the redeemed, though the precise nature of these images is held with appropriate reverence and humility. The doctrine of heaven undergirds Christian hope and motivates faithfulness, holiness, and endurance.
