Spirit guides community discernment; new canonical revelation not expected
Mennonites affirm the ongoing guidance of the Holy Spirit in the life of the community, particularly in the communal discernment process. The Spirit illuminates Scripture and helps the congregation apply it to new situations. This is not understood as new canonical revelation but as the Spirit's ongoing teaching work within the biblical canon.
The Anabaptist emphasis on community discernment creates an openness to the Spirit's guidance that goes beyond strict cessationism, but Mennonites are not Pentecostal. The expectation is that God speaks through Scripture, prayer, and the gathered community's discernment — not through dramatic prophetic oracles.
