Extra-biblical Revelation

Jehovah's Witnesses do not claim that Jehovah communicates through new divine revelations, visions, or prophecies beyond Scripture. The Bible alone contains all the truth needed for salvation. However, they do teach that the Governing Body, as the 'faithful and discreet slave' (Matthew 24:45), receives divine direction and provides authoritative interpretation of Scripture—described as 'new light' or 'increased understanding' of biblical truths that God progressively reveals to his organization at the appropriate time.

In practice, guidance from the Governing Body through The Watchtower magazine, official releases at annual conventions, and letters to congregations functions as authoritative religious instruction that members are expected to follow. This guidance has included revisions of prophetic chronology, changes in medical ethics positions, and updates to behavioral standards. Members who persistently reject Governing Body teachings are subject to disfellowshipping (excommunication). The organization's claim to serve as Jehovah's exclusive earthly channel distinguishes it from traditions that allow broader interpretive freedom.
