Extra-biblical Revelation

The ECC affirms that the Holy Spirit continues to guide, comfort, and empower believers and the church in the present day. The Pietist heritage of the ECC emphasizes the living presence of God and the believer's personal experience of the Spirit. The Spirit's direction is discerned through prayer, the study of Scripture, the counsel of other believers, and providential circumstances. The ECC is open to the Spirit's ongoing work in the church and in individual lives.

However, the ECC distinguishes between the Spirit's ongoing guidance and new written revelation. The biblical canon is closed, and no new Scripture equal to the 66 canonical books is being given. Any contemporary claim to be led by the Spirit must be tested against Scripture and confirmed by the church's discernment. The ECC is cautious about claims to new prophecy or divine communication, requiring careful evaluation and accountability.

The Pietist tradition within the ECC values both Scripture and spiritual experience, but Scripture remains primary. The Spirit's guidance always accords with Scripture and is confirmed through the community of faith. This balanced approach allows the ECC to honor the Spirit's present work while maintaining the sufficiency and finality of biblical revelation. Believers are encouraged to be open to the Spirit's leading while remaining grounded in Scripture and accountable to the church's wisdom.
