Prophecy, tongues, and words of knowledge continue today
Affirming the continuation of revelatory gifts — prophecy, tongues with interpretation, words of knowledge, visions — is the defining theological commitment of the Charismatic Movement. These gifts are expected to be active in the life of the church today, just as they were in the apostolic era described in the New Testament. The outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost is seen as ongoing, not concluded.
Mainstream charismatic theology insists that contemporary prophetic utterances do not add to the canon of Scripture and must be tested against the Bible. The debate within the movement concerns the degree of authority such gifts carry — from 'fallible impressions' to 'thus says the Lord' declarations. The former view is now dominant in most mainstream charismatic circles.
