Extra-biblical Revelation

The SBC holds that the biblical canon is closed and that no new revelatory authority exists alongside or above Scripture. The BFM2000 states that the Bible is 'a perfect treasure of divine instruction' and the 'supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried.' This is a sola scriptura commitment — Scripture is the sole and final norm for Christian faith and practice.

The SBC officially regards claims to continuing authoritative prophecy, new apostolic revelation, or extra-biblical inspired texts as departures from orthodox Protestant Christianity. Personal impressions, dreams, and experiences may have spiritual significance for individuals, but they carry no doctrinal authority and cannot contradict or supplement Scripture. This stance is reinforced by the BFM2000's strong affirmation of biblical inerrancy and sufficiency.

While individual Southern Baptists may report hearing from God in prayer or through providential circumstances, the SBC framework does not grant these subjective experiences any doctrinal normativity. This contrasts with Pentecostal and charismatic traditions, which often hold that the gifts of prophecy and tongues continue as vehicles of genuine divine communication.
