Deuterocanonical books not canonical; Protestant canon affirmed
The Church of the Brethren affirms the 66-book Protestant biblical canon and does not recognize the deuterocanonical books as canonical Scripture. The Brethren stand in the Protestant tradition, having emerged from Anabaptist roots that affirmed sola scriptura and the Protestant Old Testament canon.
However, the Brethren do not disparage the deuterocanonical books as worthless; they may have historical and theological interest. But they are not received as divine Scripture and are not authoritative for doctrine and practice. The 39 books of the Hebrew Scriptures plus the 27 New Testament books constitute the canon.
