Priesthood of all believers; ordained men and women; no sacerdotal mediation
The ECC affirms the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers: every Christian is a priest before God with direct access to God through Christ. No human mediator is required for salvation or for communion with God. Christ alone is the high priest and mediator between God and humanity. The ECC firmly rejects Roman Catholic and Orthodox sacramental theology in which clergy function as essential mediators and perform redemptive acts.
However, the ECC also recognizes ordained pastoral leadership. Ministers are ordained to preach the Word, administer the ordinances, lead in worship and prayer, counsel believers, and provide spiritual oversight. Ordination is a public commissioning and recognition of a calling to ministry, not the conferral of supernatural power or a special priestly status. Ordained pastors are accountable to Scripture and to the church's standards.
Since 1976, the ECC has affirmed the ordination of women to pastoral ministry. The denomination recognizes that the Holy Spirit gifts women as well as men for ministry, and gender is not a biblical basis for excluding anyone from ordained service. This affirmation reflects the ECC's commitment to hearing and following the Spirit's leading in the church. Both men and women serve as senior pastors, associate pastors, missionaries, and denominational leaders throughout the ECC.
