Blood Transfusions

Messianic Judaism affirms that blood transfusions are permissible and that modern medical care should be pursued as an expression of valuing life (pikuach nefesh). While the Torah prohibits the consumption of blood for food (Leviticus 17:10-12), this restriction is understood as applying to dietary practices, not to medical necessity. Medical transfusions are understood as a legitimate means of preserving life and health, and refusing transfusions would be a violation of the commandment to preserve life.

This position distinguishes Messianic Judaism from certain other groups (such as Jehovah's Witnesses) that restrict blood transfusions on religious grounds. The emphasis on the sanctity of life and the legitimacy of medical intervention reflects both Jewish values (the principle of pikuach nefesh) and Christian stewardship of the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit. Believers are encouraged to seek healing through prayer and medical treatment together.
