Nuanced
Recognized as late addition; not appealed to for Trinitarian proof
Oneness Pentecostal churches recognize that 1 John 5:7-8 (the Comma Johanneum) is a late addition. The recognition that the longer reading is a later addition supports the Oneness position that explicit Trinitarian formulas are not present in the original text.
Oneness interpretation maintains that the passage, even with the longer reading, can be interpreted modally: the Father, Word, and Holy Ghost as three manifestations of one God.
