God's sovereignty in salvation affirmed, but not rigid Calvinist TULIP framework.

Darby and early Brethren leaders were influenced by Calvinist thought regarding God's sovereignty in salvation, but they did not adopt a rigidly systematic Calvinist TULIP framework. While God's foreknowledge and purpose in salvation are affirmed, Brethren theology emphasizes responsibility and the call to faith. Among contemporary Open Brethren there is considerable variety in how predestination is understood, ranging from more Calvinist perspectives to Arminian emphasis on human choice.

Key Distinctions

Election model:
unconditional election (Calvinist/TULIP) — God sovereignly chooses the elect apart from foreseen faith
Double predestination:
affirmed — God elects some to salvation and passes over others
Free will teaching:
compatibilist — humans act freely but God's will is sovereign
