Christ's death is the atoning sacrifice; substitutionary and redemptive in scope

The UPCI affirms the atoning death of Jesus Christ as the ground of human salvation. Christ died for the sins of all humanity — his blood shed on the cross provides the basis for forgiveness and redemption. The UPCI's Articles of Faith affirm that 'the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin' (1 John 1:7) and that his death, burial, and resurrection are the core events of the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

Because the UPCI identifies Jesus as the one God incarnate, his atoning death has a particular theological weight: it was not merely a human being dying for humanity but the one God himself making sacrifice in human form. This gives the atonement infinite significance — the price paid was the life of the God of the universe, offered in human flesh for human redemption.

The UPCI's soteriology links the atonement closely to the specific response required for salvation: repentance (turning from sin), water baptism in Jesus' name (applying the blood of Christ through the name), and Spirit baptism (receiving the life of Christ). The atonement provides the basis; the new birth experience applies its benefits. This sacramental connection of the atonement to the specific Acts 2:38 experience is characteristic of UPCI soteriology.
