Independent Fundamental Churches do not accept the Shepherd of Hermas as part of the biblical canon. Though it is an ancient Christian text, it lacks the apostolic authority and divine inspiration characteristic of Scripture. The Shepherd of Hermas is treated as a non-canonical early Christian document that may be studied for historical interest but carries no authority for Christian doctrine or practice.

Fundamentalist commitment to sola scriptura—Scripture alone—means that only the 66-book canon is normative. Other religious writings, ancient or modern, must be evaluated in light of Scripture rather than given equal authority. The Shepherd of Hermas, while historically interesting, does not meet the test of apostolicity and divine authority required for canonical status.
