Because God is absolutely holy and sin is an infinite affront to his holiness, the punishment is permanent and severe. Hell is not arbitrary cruelty but just judgment upon those who have rejected God's mercy offered in Christ. IFCA doctrine rejects annihilationism (the belief that souls cease to exist) and universalism (the belief that all will eventually be saved). The soul is immortal; death does not end conscious existence. The wicked will be conscious in hell, aware of their lost state and judgment.
