The Wesleyan Church affirms that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, existed eternally before His incarnation. He is the divine Logos mentioned in John's Gospel, who was with God and was God from the beginning. Through Christ all things were made, and He sustains all things by His powerful word. Before His birth in Bethlehem, Christ made appearances to Old Testament saints and guided Israel through the wilderness.

The pre-existence of Christ is not merely a matter of God's foreknowledge of Christ but involves the actual, personal existence of the Son in eternity with the Father. This pre-existence is foundational to understanding the incarnation: God did not create a new person when Christ was born but rather the eternal Son took on human flesh. The church teaches that in the economy of salvation, each member of the Trinity plays a distinct personal role: the Father sends, the Son accomplishes redemption, and the Spirit applies salvation.
