Three degrees of heaven corresponding to degrees of love and wisdom

Swedenborg described heaven as consisting of three distinct degrees or levels of spiritual development, each corresponding to degrees of love of God and love of the neighbor. The lowest degree (natural heaven) corresponds to faith and obedience; the middle degree (spiritual heaven) to love of the neighbor and understanding of truth; and the highest degree (celestial heaven) to love of God and direct perception of divine truth.

Heaven is not static but dynamic—a place of continual growth in wisdom and love. The saved enjoy eternal progression, taking on new wisdom and deeper love forever. Community, meaningful service, and family relationships continue in heaven. This vision of heaven emphasizes active participation in divine life rather than passive rest.
