The RCA affirms the virgin birth of Christ as attested in Matthew 1 and Luke 1 and as expressed in the Three Forms of Unity. Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary without a human father.

This doctrine affirms both the supernatural character of the incarnation and the genuine humanity of Christ. Mary is honored as the mother of Jesus, the chosen vessel through whom God became incarnate. However, the RCA does not venerate Mary or attribute to her immaculate conception or perpetual virginity, distinguishing itself from Catholic Marian theology.

After Christ's birth, Mary had normal marital relations with Joseph and bore other children. The virgin birth is not understood to place Mary in a unique state of holiness but rather highlights the extraordinary divine action in the incarnation. The doctrine remains important as it underscores Christ's unique identity and sinless nature.
