The New Apostolic Church affirms that Scripture is divinely inspired and authoritative for the Christian faith. The church does not engage in historical-critical methods that would undermine biblical authority.

However, the NAC's understanding of authority extends beyond Scripture to the teachings of the living Apostles. The NAC Catechism, which represents the collected teachings of the Apostles, is understood as interpreting Scripture authoritatively and as providing contemporary application of biblical truth. When there is a question about proper interpretation or practice, the word of the Chief Apostle or ordained Apostles provides the definitive guidance.

This understanding reflects the NAC's conviction that Christ continues to speak through the restored apostolic office. Scripture is the foundation, but apostolic teaching is the authoritative interpretation and application of Scripture. Believers are expected to receive apostolic teaching with the same reverence as they accord Scripture, since the Apostles are understood as Christ's appointed representatives.
