The LCMS teaches classical theistic doctrine concerning the nature of God. God is infinite, eternal, and self-existent; he is not dependent on any creature. God possesses all perfections in fullness—omnipotence (unlimited power), omniscience (complete knowledge), omnipresence (present everywhere), and eternality (existing without beginning or end).

God is perfectly holy, absolutely just, infinitely merciful, and supremely wise. These attributes are not separate qualities grafted onto God's nature but flow from his essential being. Divine simplicity is affirmed—God is what he has; his essence and attributes are identical. God is personal and knowable; he acts in history, creating, sustaining, redeeming, and judging all things.

While the LCMS does not mandate a position on every detail of the classical theism vs. open theism debate, it stands firmly within the classical theist tradition, affirming God's complete foreknowledge and sovereign providential control over all creation. God's decrees are eternal and immutable, though human free will is also affirmed in a way that respects both divine sovereignty and human responsibility.
