Hutterite ministers (preachers and Vorsteher) are male, elected from within the colony by the male members, and serve without salary — all members equally participate in the communal economy. There is no professional clergy class; ministers are farmers or craftsmen who serve the spiritual needs of the colony alongside their ordinary work.

Women do not hold formal ministerial or leadership roles in Hutterite colonies, consistent with their inherited Anabaptist tradition and their conservative communal culture. However, women's roles in colony management, education of children, and communal work are substantial and honored.
