The Church of God (Cleveland), as a Pentecostal denomination, affirms that the Holy Spirit continues to speak to the Church today through prophetic gifts and utterances. Prophecy, as the ability to speak forth a message from God, is among the gifts of the Spirit that continue and are operative in the Church. However, all such contemporary revelation is subject to the authority of Scripture — prophecy must be tested against Scripture and does not add new doctrine or supersede biblical teaching.

The Church distinguishes between Scripture (the completed written Word of God) and the ongoing voice of the Spirit (prophetic utterance, guidance, and illumination). Extra-biblical revelation is affirmed as real but subordinate and derivative. All claims to prophetic speech must be evaluated by the fruit of the Spirit, conformity to Scripture, and the discernment of the community of faith. The principle is that the Spirit does not contradict the Scripture.
