Churches of Christ affirm that God created all things and established the heavens and the earth in the beginning (Genesis 1:1). However, the fellowship does not insist on a specific interpretation of how creation occurred or the precise age of the earth. Some Churches of Christ members hold to a young-earth creationism (interpreting the genealogies of Genesis as literal chronologies); others accept an old-earth interpretation or theistic evolution, provided that God is understood as the ultimate Creator and sustainer of all things.

The Restoration Movement's commitment to biblical authority does not extend to creating additional doctrinal tests beyond what Scripture explicitly teaches. Genesis 1:1 clearly states that 'in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,' but the text does not specify the mechanism of creation or precise dating. Churches of Christ therefore treat the method and timing of creation as an area where believers may hold differing views while maintaining fellowship. The essential truth—that God is Creator—is non-negotiable; the mechanisms and chronologies are open to discussion within the fellowship.
