For the Amish, Jesus's humility, servant-heartedness, and willingness to suffer without retaliation are the primary ethical models. His washing of the disciples' feet (John 13) is institutionalized in the Amish foot-washing ordinance. His silence before his accusers and nonresistance to his executioners exemplify the Gelassenheit and nonresistance that characterize Amish community life.
